FRANCE – Working on a cruise ship might have been a job that many people worldwide dream about. Crewmembers and Officers are very well paid and taken care of by a cruise company, in addition to being able to travel around the world for free.

Anyone from any nationals can work on a cruise ship if they speak English well, pass medical checkup, and have no previous criminal records including desertion.

There are two types of employees on a cruise ship, both of which we can call sailors, that are officers and crewmembers. Officers do white-collar work while crewmembers do blue-collar work and what position a person can apply depends on their educational background and experience.

Some people might do a job that they do not really wish for in their first contract, but they may apply for another better position if there is a job vacancy on board and they are fully qualified.

A sailor is scheduled to work on a ship that has been chosen by the cruise ship company. However, they may request to be sent to a certain ship if they have good reasons. For example, if their partners work on a certain ship and they want to work on the same ship with them.

Every cruise ship company has dozens of ships. Every ship sails for different countries across seas and oceans in the world. The itinerary might change every a few years.

Any crewmember and officer who is off duty and not in port manning may go ashore at any port the ship docks. They can take as many pictures as they wish. They can also visit tourist attractions, either along with other crewmembers or passengers, that are close to the port unless the ship stays for three days and two nights.

“We are not likely make a good living and lead a life of luxury if we work in our own respective countries,” Ryan said, a crewmember from a developing country.

Crewmembers can enjoy facilities according to their ranks and officers can even have some more privileges.

In addition to very high salaries, anyone who works on the cruise ship can have as much food as they want, can make use of any sport facilities such as indoor and outdoor gyms, soccer or basketball fields, swimming pools, free healthcare, free laundry, and playing PlayStation.
