JAPAN — There are many cruise ships that visit Japan, most of which belong to American companies such as Princess Cruises. A lot of Princess cruise ships sail around Japanese waters, one of those is Sun Princess.

A Japanese leading travel agency worked with Princess Cruises to organize the first ever world cruise departing from Japan on an American cruise ship. Sun Princess set sail from Yokohama in April 2019 for a 98-night voyage, which visited 31 ports in 20 countries. Yokohama was not the only Japanese city that Sun Princess visited.

Japan has a strict regulation to make sure all people from any ship are healthy, by doing a screening with a thermometer gun even before the COVID-19 pandemic, before they are allowed to go ashore. They also need to have some kind of pass that they carry during their stay on Japanese soil.

When the ship moored at a port in one of Japanese cities, Kagoshima, there was a Japanese traditional dance by a group of young women to welcome passengers and sailors as soon as they landed from the ship gangway. Not only could they dance, but also play some classical Japanese music instruments.

This attracted foreigners’ attention as they saw with their own eyes something did not exist in their own countries. Those young women in Japanese traditional clothing were very friendly towards anyone wishing to take pictures with them.

For those who were not able or a little lazy to go away from the ship, they could just stay at around the pier accompanied by those young ladies who wore colorful artificial hair or make good use of the free Wi-Fi with an excellent connection considering the internet fee on board is extremely expensive with sometimes a poor connection.

“I am happy when I can go ashore on Japanese soil. Not all Japanese can speak English and I don’t speak Japanese, but it doesn’t matter. All Japanese ports and their surroundings are very clean and cool with fresh air. I feel safe here as Japanese are honest. And what I like best is a very fast internet connection everywhere for free, so I don’t have to spend USD 20 on a 222 MB data package on board,” Ryan said.
